In 1971 during an interview at the Chelsea Hotel, the Brazilian poet Haroldo de Campos commented to the artist Hélio Oiticica, then living in New York City, that the Cinema Marginal director Júlio Bressane sought “to strangle the verbal language of cinema.” This presentation will consider how Oiticica, his collaborator Neville D’Almeida, Bressane, and other experimental artists and critics from Brazil sought to transform cinema into a “deliterate" form, exploding its continuity into visual and aural fragments in a new calibration of what Marshall McLuhan described as the hot and cold tendencies of media.
